Curly Cares

Curly Cares is our charity initiative supported by Curly Collection and Curly Music. As part of curly collections and curly music desire to help kids throughout the world and in an effort to make the world a better place for our kids, we currently support two charities, Ban Rom Sai and Lumina.

Ban Rom Sai

Ban Rom Sai is an orphanage located in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, which provides a home to 30 children, ranging in age from 5 to 18. Established in 2001, this facility provides a home for orphans, mostly including those who have contracted HIV at birth. The home aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children, and give them purpose and help them find a skill they are good at and enjoy.
Children have the opportunity to learn photography, painting, dance, weaving and dying skills, among others. These skills coupled with education and computer skills, will hopefully give the children something they can build on for their future. In fact, Ban Rom Sai raises funds by selling artwork and crafts made by the children, as well as selling products on-line that are produced at the home.
In recent years, Ban Rom Sai has planned several projects that will help the home, as well as the children. One recent project has been the establishment of a Guest House on the grounds adjacent to the home. The Guest House not only generates additional income for the home, but it will also be a training ground for those children that are interested in working in the tourism and hospitality business. A more recent venture has been the establishment of the Saitong Restaurant in Chiang Mai city. Similar to the guesthouse, the restaurant’s revenues will go to Ban Rom Sai and interested children can train at the restaurant.

Curly Cares and Ban Rom Sai Partnership

In early 2010, Curly Cares donated enough funds to build its own Guest House called the Curly House. It is located next to the four cottages on the grounds adjacent to the Ban Rom Sai home. Ban Rom Sai has completed the design of the Curly House and they are planning to start the construction of the Guest House in October of 2010. The completion of the Curly House is projected for the spring of 2011.
The Curly House will help the orphanage by generating additional income from its guest for Ban Rom Sai. In addition, the Curly House will also be a place, where some of the children, who are interested in entering the hospitality or tourism business, can learn the trade. The Curly House presents an excellent potential employment opportunity for the children and it will be a way for them to earn a living without having to leave Ban Rom Sai.

Lumina Business Technologies & Hearing Center (Lumina)

Lumina Business Technologies & Hearing Center is a clinic and learning facility that assists hearing impaired children and young adults in Bali, Indonesia. The facility provides support and opportunities for the hearing impaired by giving them the proper education and skills needed to overcome their challenges.
Lumina Business Technologies & Hearing Center was started by Nick H.L. Liem, in 2003. Liem, who was a volunteer for Rotary International Hearing Projects in Zimbabwe and Uganda, saw a lack of facilities for the hearing impaired children in his native country of Indonesia. With the help of two fellow Rotarians, Liem began a project in 2003 to bring hearing assistance and services to the children and young adults of Bali, Indonesia.
Today, Lumina Business Technologies & Hearing Center has several programs that specialize in assisting children who have hearing impairment, from identification of hearing loss at birth to developing business skills as they reach early adulthood. The facility includes a fully equipped Audiology Clinic, hearing aid dispensing, ABR/ASSR testing services, and a General Practice Medical clinic. It also provides educational services and programs such as a preschool and kindergarten, speech therapy, cultural dance for hearing impaired students, specialized teacher training, trade/life skills training and business development program. With the vast services and programs that Lumina offers, its goals are to accommodate and support hearing impaired children and families with the services and equipment that they need.

Curly Cares and Lumina Partnership

Curly Cares has recently partnered up with Lumina Business Technologies & Hearing Center to raise and provide funds needed to help these children and young adults in need. We currently fund the salaries of teachers in the Lumina Hearing Center in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia and will fund the construction of a deaf school and community center for the deaf community in Singhajaya, Northern Bali that is projected to open in 2011.
We have also recently leased property, in the Sanur area, that will be a training facility for the graduates of the Lumina school. Since, graduates from these deaf schools face difficult challenges, the facility will teach them the necessary skills that will find them employment in the growing textile industry. This facility will give them a hands on training on skills such as sewing, fabric cutting, pattern making, silk screening, embroidery and etc.
