リコーダーを習うように、ハワイでは必ずウクレレを学習するので、大抵の人はウクレレを弾くことができます。ジェイク・シマブクロもそうやって小さいときにウクレレと出会い、その魅力に取りつかれ、ラジオで流れるあらゆるジャンルの曲を聴いては「ウクレレで弾けっこない」曲までをもカバーし、周りを驚かせていたと言います。
新しいことに次々と挑戦し、ウクレレの概念を打ち破ってきたジェイクはPure Heart, COLONでの活動を経て、2002年にソロとしてのキャリアをスタート。ファースト・アルバム Sunday Morningはナ・ホク・ハノハノ・アワーズInstrumental Album of the Yearに、そしてジェイクは一般投票によるFavourite Entertainer of the Yearに選ばれます。(photo jakeshimabukuro.com）
2003年のCrosscurrents、2004年のWalking Down Rainhillでもナ・ホク・アワーズの主要部門を受賞したジェイクは2004年、ハワイ州観光局のイメージキャラクターに抜擢され、日本での人気はうなぎ上りに。
2005年リリースのDragonはHawaii Music Awardのベスト・ロック・アルバムに選ばれ、ナ・ホクではまたしてもFavourite Entertainer of the Yearに選ばれました。
しかし、「ウクレレの魔術師」としてのジェイクを世界に知らしめるきっかけとなったのは2006年、まだスタートしてまもないYoutubeにアップされた一本のビデオ。ビートルズの中でもウクレレが大好きだったというジョージ・ハリソンはジェイクにモチベーションを与えてきた一人。そのジョージの名曲「While My Guitar Gently Weeps」のカバーをニューヨークのセントラル・パークで弾いているジェイクの様子がYoutubeに投稿されたのです。瞬く間に数百万回もアクセスされ、それを見てウクレレを始めたという人も少なくないそうです。
While My Guitar Gently Weepsが収録されているGently Weepsと同じ2006年にリリースされたのが映画「フラ・ガール」。ジェイクにとっては初めての映画音楽への挑戦、映画、音楽ともに大ヒットしたのはまだ記憶に新しいと思います。
演奏活動、レコーディングと精力的に活動を続けるジェイク、2009年には初のライブ盤を、そして３年振りの映画音楽を手がけました。2006年のアカデミーで最優秀脚色賞をとったハリウッド映画の日本版リメイク、「サイドウェイズ」です。ジェイクの奏でるオーガニックなサウンドが劇中に登場する葡萄畑に見事にマッチしていました。
ウクレレ奏者にならなければ教師になっていたかもしれないというくらい子供が好きなジェイクは、Music is Good MedicineというNPOを立ち上げ、ウクレレと音楽を通じて子供たちに夢を持つことの大切さ、ドラッグの恐ろしさを説いています。
そうした活動の模様を収めたビデオを見ると、ジェイクが一般投票で選ばれるFavourite Entertainer of the Yearに毎年のように選ばれるわけが分かります。
そうしたジェイク、クィーンの「ボヘミアン・ラプソディー」やフィアンセのケリーに捧げた新曲「ケリーズ・ソング」などを収めた新譜「I ♥ Ukulele」を引っさげた来日公演、まもなくキックオフです。
While My Guitar Gently Weeps / Jake Shimabukuro
All Hawaiian kids learn how to play the ukulele at school, so everyone knows the basics. But Jake fell in love with the instrument at the age of four, and developed a deep passion to create and innovate. As a teenager, he says jokingly, playing some of the latest hits was a guaranteed way to impress the girls. And so, he would listen to the radio, and experiment with and invent various techniques that enabled him to create sounds never thought possible on the ukulele.
In 2002, he came out with his first solo album ‘Sunday Morning’. It won the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Best Instrumental Award, while Jake was chosen Favourite Entertainer of the Year by popular vote. ‘Sunday Morning’ was followed by ‘Crosscurrents’ (2003) and ‘Walking Down Rainhill’ (2004). Every single one of his albums has won numerous awards.
After being chosen as spokesman for Hawaii Tourism Japan in 2004, he became a household name in Japan as well. But what propelled him onto the international stage was a video of him playing the George Harrison classic, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, in Central Park, which was posted on Youtube without his knowledge. The video garnered millions of hits, leading to bookings and offers from all over.
2006 was also the year when he tried his hand at film music for the first time, composing the music for the Japanese award-winning film ‘Hula Girls’.
Citing Energy, Imagination and Innovation as his motto, Jake has made it his mission to prove that anything is possible on the ukulele. In 2009, he came out with his first live recording which includes a cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. He also wrote the music for a Japanese remake of the 2006 film Sideways.
In his free time, he supports the NPO, Music is Good Medicine by visiting schools to convey the wonders of music and inspire kids to pursue their dreams. His latest album, I ♥ Ukulele Tour, which came out in July, includes a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody and a love song he composed for his fiancé, Kelly, which hopefully we’ll be able to hear during his’ I ♥ Ukulele Tour’ that kicks off in less than a fortnight.
