今年、ハワイのグラミー賞と言われるナ・ホク・ハノハノ・アウォーズで最優秀女性ヴォーカリストに輝いたMailani。2009年にソロデビューをしたばかりですが、ハワイのみならず日本でも大人気だったデュオ、Keahiwaiの一人として2001年から活躍しています。
Keahiwaiはハワイ語で「火と水」という意味だそうですが、中学生のときからの親友、マイラニとレイからなる元気いっぱいのロコガールからなるユニット。バスケットボールに夢中だった２人が、お互いの音楽の才能に気がついたのは知り合ってから６年後、教会のイベントがきっかけでした。「歌うまいね！ウクレレすごいじゃない！一緒にやったら楽しいかも。」そういったノリで２人は学校のタレント・コンテストにエントリーをし、見事優勝。
卒業後は大学に通いながら、週末などにライブを行っていたのですが、ジェイク・シマブクロが最初に在籍していたバンド、Pure Heartの元ヴォーカリスト、Jon Yamasatoに見いだされ、2001年に「Local Girl」で衝撃のデビューを果たします。１０代の女の子の日常、そして心の機微をハワイアン・レゲエにのせて歌った内容で、その年のナ・ホクで見事新人賞と一般投票で選ばれるFavourite Entertainer of the Yearを受賞。(photo: Honolulu Adviser)
２枚目のSatisfied, 3枚目のDangerousでもナ・ホクを受賞し、ノリに乗っていたKeahiwaiでしたが、レイの出産を機に活動を一時中止。復帰後にリリースしたChangingではトレードマークの美しいメロディー、さわやかさ、元気の良さだけでなく、大人の女性らしいしっとりさも加わり、文字通り、進化を感じさせるアルバムでした。しかし、これがKeahiwaiとしての最後のアルバムとなってしまいました。
このビデオはSatisfiedからシングルリリースされたFalling。
その後、マイラニは2007年にMighty Jというトリオを結成し、Keahiwaiとは違うヒップホップ系のアルバム「Calling Out」をリリースします。
また、子育ての傍らホノルルでブティック・スパをオープンするなど、充実した日々を送っていました。しかし、2009年、ついにソロ・デビューを決意し、ハワイアンの名曲とオリジナル曲を組み合わせたセルフ・タイトル・アルバムをリリース。Teresa Bright, Amy Hanaiali‘I, そしてRaiatea Helmに続くハワイを代表する女性ヴォーカリストになるのでは、と期待されています。
Lei Aloha Lei Makamae / Mailani
This year’s Na Hoku for Best Female Vocalist went to singer-song writer Mailani who is best known for her collaborative efforts as a member of the award winning duo Keahiwai and more recently the trio Mighty J.
Mailani met Lei, with whom she formed Keahiwai, while playing on the junior highschool basketball team. But it wasn’t until six years later that they stumbled upon each other’s hidden musical talents. Realizing the fun they could have, they decided to enter a talent contest at school and won.
After finishing high school, they went on to college, giving occasional gigs at coffee shops and gatherings. It was during one of these occasions that they were discovered by producer Jon Yamasato, who used to be a member of Jake Shimabukuro’s first band, Pure Heart. This lead to the release of their first album, ‘Local Girls’ in 2001, which won them a Na Hoku for Most Promising Artist and Favourite Entertainer of the Year. Their second and third albums won them more Hoku’s and established their reputation for smooth harmonies, insightful lyrics, and light local pop sound that included radio-friendly reggae-style rhythms. After a hiatus, due to marriage and childbirth, they returned with their fourth album ‘Changing’ which demonstrated their growth as human beings. But this turned out to be their last album.
Mailani went on to graduate from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hawaiian Studies and became a licensed massage therapist. In 2006, she was introduced to two other women with whom she formed the urban hip-hop trio Mighty J.
In 2009, she decided to try it solo and came out with a self-titled album which features a mixture of Hawaiian favourites plus some original tunes, all of which highlight her distinctive and beautiful voice that has been compared to the likes of some of the greatest Hawaiian singers in history. She’s also opened a boutique spa in Honolulu.
