今年のナ・ホク・ハノハノ・アワーズで新人賞及びベスト・コンテンポラリー・アルバムを獲得したのは、ハワイ語で「涼やかでやわらかな香り」を意味する名のAnuhea。
そのナチュラルで伸びやかな歌声とアコースティック・ソウル、R＆B、レゲエ、ポップスを見事にブレンドしたサウンド、そして心の機微を描いた歌詞とで瞬く間にハワイの人たちの心を掴んだ23歳の歌姫は、早くも「女性版ジャック・ジョンソン」と絶賛されています。
祖父はジャズ・ギタリスト、そして叔母はハワイでも最も人気ある女性グループ、Na Leo Pilimehanaのメンバーの一人という音楽ファミリー出身のアヌヘア、高校生の頃からミュージカルに出たり、地元のテレビ局でプレゼンターを務めたりしたそうです。映画製作の才能が認められ、カリフォルニアの大学に奨学生として迎えられたものの、映画よりもやはり音楽、ということで１年間で中退、オーストラリアを放浪したあとハワイに戻ってシンガー・ソングライターとなるべく活動を開始します。カフェでバリスタとして働きながらライブをこなし、地元のミニFM局が収録した番組を編集してデモテープを作り、Myspaceのページにアップするなど、作詞作曲はもちろんのこと、マネジメントからPRまですべて自分でこなしてきました。そうした地道な活動が実を結び、去年、セルフタイトル・アルバムでメジャー・デビュ―を果たし、今最も注目されているアーティストの一人となりました。
アヌヘアはMyspaceを通じてファンとのコンタクトを取り続けていますが、その中にAcoustic for Autismと題した投稿がありました。自閉症のお子さんを持つ仕事仲間が中心となって作ったコンピレーション・アルバムで、売り上げは１００％自閉症のチャリティーに寄付されるそうです。アヌヘアもその趣旨に賛同し、Endlesslyという曲を提供しています。癒し系のアルバムなので、こちらの方もぜひチェックしてみて下さい。
ところで、アヌヘアのバンドメンバーの一人が今年、ほかで活躍している仲間３人と共にThe Green Bandというスーパー・バンドを結成しました。２月にデビューするやいなや、ハワイ中のFMステーションでヘヴィープレイされ、その中のLove I, AliveはチャートのNo.1 & No.2に。そして３月には米ビルボードのレゲエ・チャートでも３位にランクイン。今最もホットなハワイアン・レゲエ・バンドです。
そのThe Green とアヌヘア、一緒にツアーに出ることも多く、ハワイに対する固定観念を打破し、ハワイの素晴らしさをどんどんアピールしていきたい、と張り切っています。

Here I Go Again / Anuhea
This year’s Na Hoku for Most Promising Artist and Best Contemporary Album went to singer-song writer Anuhea, whose name translates into something like ‘a cool breeze of the heavenly rose.’
Her signature guitar flow, sultry vocals and honest song writing mixed in with a blend of acoustic soul, pop and reggae has already earned her a reputation of being the female version of multi-million selling Jack Johnson.
Coming from a musical family—her grandfather is a jazz guitarist and her aunt, a member of Na Leo Pilimehana, Anuheal began showcasing her numerous talents while attending high school. Besides writing music, she hosted a variety of TV shows for local TV stations and acted in school musicals. After high school, she won a scholarship to attend film school in California. But after a year or so, she realized that music was her true love, and after spending several weeks in Australia on a soul-searching odyssey, she returned to Hawaii to launch her career in music. Working full time as a waitress and barista, she made use of every opportunity to perform and took the initiative to market herself. She even took recordings from a live taping for a public radio station and created a demo tape that she uploaded onto her Myspace page. This caught the attention of her current manager and in April 2009, she came out with her self-titled debut album ‘Anuhea’.
Anuhea makes an effort to reach out to her fans through her Myspace page and in a recent entry she refers to the charity project Acoustic for Autism and how she came to become involved in it.
Around the time Anuea came out with her debut album, one of the members of her band, JP Kennedy, was busy putting together his own band, the Green. Comprised of four talented musicians whose music is inspired and drawn from many different sources, they came out with their debut album in February this year and have become one of the most popular reggae bands to come out of Hawaii in recent years.
Anuhea and the Green frequently tour together, united by their love of Hawaii and their mission to introduce the real Hawaii to audiences worldwide.
