ジャマイカ+ハワイアンということでジャワイアンと呼ばれていたサウンド、最近ではハワイアン・レゲエの方が一般的ですが、とにかく勢いのあるジャンルで、FijiやThree Plus, Ekoluといった人気バンド以外にも新しいアーティストたちが次々とデビューしています。
今回は今の季節にぴったりのさわやかでメロディアスなサウンドを聴かせてくれる「Hawaii’s all time favourite band」、名実共に人気No.1のEkoluを取り上げたいと思います。
1995年、高校の音楽の授業で一緒になった３人の若者はすっかり意気投合し、バンドを結成することに。そしてメンバーの伯父でもあった音楽の先生にアドバイスを受けながら練習を重ね、学校のタレント・コンテストに参加します。結果は２位でしたが、それにめげることなく、３人は卒業後もライブを重ね、1999年にTroy FernandezとRoy Sakumaというウクレレ界の重鎮のプロデュースによるデビュー・アルバム「Down in the Valley」をリリース。これが大ヒットし、翌年のナ・ホク・ハノハノ・アウォーズの新人賞を受賞。
2枚目のアルバム「Shores of Waiehu」はハワイでNo.1、そして米ビルボード・ワールド・ミュージックチャートのNo.12に、そしてナ・ホクではベスト・レゲエ・アルバムに選ばれました。
３枚目の「Back to the Valley」は再びナ・ホクを受賞。デビューから１０年目にリリースされた４枚目のアルバム「Ekolu Music」はビルボードチャートの５位に、そしてまたしてもナ・ホクを獲得します。
そして2009年、新メンバー２一人を加え、新たなスタートを切ったEkoluはEkolu IIをリリース。Ekoluらしい美しいメロディーとさわやかさで今年のナ・ホクでもベスト・レゲエ・アルバムを受賞しました。
Watayaya / Ekolu
Jawaiian or Hawaiian reggae as its more commonly called these days, has become the most heavily played music on Hawaiian radio stations, with new artists making their debut one after the other. But when it comes to the really great bands, the first name that comes to mind is Ekolu.
It all began in 1995 when three young boys signed up for a music class at high school. They hit it off and decided to form a band. And with tutoring from their ukulele and slack key guitar teacher, who also happened to be the uncle of one of the boys, they entered a local talent contest and won second place. Not to be deterred, they continued to practice and play in front of audiences whenever they had a chance, and in 1999 they came out with their debut album ‘Down in the Valley’ which was produced by ukulele masters Troy Fernandez and Roy Sakuma. Ekolu’s beautiful melodies, and island rhythms that gets listeners stomping their feet to the beat, became an immediate hit throughout Hawaii and won them a Na Hoku for Most Promising Artist the following year.
Three years later, they came out with their second album ‘Shores of Waiehu’ which made No.1 in Hawaii and No.12 on the Billboard World Music Charts. It won a Na Hoku for Best Reggae Album and Ekolu repeated their feat the following year with their third album ‘Back to the Valley’. By this time, they had established their reputation as ‘Hawaii’s all time favourite band’.
Their 5th album released to commemorate their 10th anniversary went to No.5 on the Billboard charts and earned them yet another Hoku.
2009 saw them making a fresh start with the two additional members. Their latest release ‘Ekolu II’ won this year’s Hoku for Best Reggae Album.
