古くはゴールドラッシュの頃から、実の多くの人たちがアメリカン・ドリームを求めてゴールデンステート、カリフォルニアにやってきました。今でも人口の約１／４が外国生まれというくらい人種構成に富んでいます。そうした多様性は芸術や文化においても言えることで、カリフォルニアは映画だけでなく音楽における発信地としての古い歴史があります。Curly Music、今月からはそのカリフォルニア発の音楽にスポットライトを当てて行きたいと思います。まずは６０年代のサーフミュージック。
サーフ・ミュージックというと、Curly Musicのハワイ編でもとりあげたジャック・ジョンソンなどに代表される穏やかで温かみのあるアコースティック・サウンドをイメージされる方も多いかもしれませんが、サーフ・ミュージックということばが最初に使われ始めたのは1960年代、Dick Daleの登場以降です。
ボストン生まれのデイルは10才の頃からウクレレやギター、トランペットを習っていましたが、１７歳のときに家族と一緒にに南カリフォルニアに移り住み、当時大流行していたサーフィンの魅力にはまります。そして、ギターサウンドに波乗りのビート感を取り入れるために「ギターを打楽器に見立てた」結果、早弾きやリヴァーブを効かせた独自のスタイルを生みだします。
１９６１年、父親の経営するDELTONレーベルからシングル「Let’s Go Trippin’」をリリースした直後からマスコミの間でサーフ・ミュージックという言葉が使われるようになり、「レッツ・ゴー・トリッピン」は社会現象といえるほど大ヒットしました。
Let’s Go Trippin’ / Dick Dale and His Deltones
Ever since the California Gold Rush of 1849, people from all over the world have come to seek their fortunes in the ‘Land of Milk and Honey’. Today, one out of every people living in California was born outside the United States. It’s a diverse state in terms of population, climate, geography and culture. Not only is it the film capital of the world, it’s also known for its diverse music culture. This is the state that gave birth to Surf Music, Psychedelic Rock, Folk Rock, Country Rock and 3rd Wave Ska. And over the next several months, Curly Music will be featuring some of the best tunes to come out of the Golden State, starting with Surf Music.
To many people, Jack Johnson is probably one of the first names that come to mind upon hearing this term. But the true pioneer of surf music was Dick Dale, a guitarist who was also an avid surfer. Dale was born in Boston but moved to southern California with his family when he was in his teens. There, he fell in love with surfing and it wasn’t long before he began experimenting with various techniques in order to reflect the roar of the waves and the beat that he felt while surfing. His father owned a record store, and in 1961, Dale came out with his first single ‘Let’s Go Trippin’. In no time at all it became a sensational hit, causing the media to refer to Dale’s use of guitar reverb and fast staccato picking as ‘surf music’.
