サーフ・ミュージックの生みの親、ディック・デイルはサーフィンの感覚を初めて音楽で表現した人ですが、前回ご紹介した「Let’s Go Trippin’」を初めとする曲名の殆どは、サーファー仲間が彼の音楽を聴いて感じたままに口にした言葉をそのままタイトルにしたものだそうです。ファーストアルバム「Surfer’sChoice」に収録されている代表作の一つ「Surf Beat」もまさしく「波のうねり」そのもの。いつしかサーファーたちはデイルのことをKing of the Surf Guitarと呼ぶようになります。
そうしたデイルのサウンド作りに不可欠だったのがフェンダーとのコラボレーションです。エレキ・ギターやベース、アンプのトップブランドとして知られるフェンダーは,４０年代から南カリフォルニアでエレキギターなどの製造に携わっていたレオ・フェンダーが設立したブランド。レオはエキサイティングなサウンドを聴かせるデイルに「好きに演奏して」と言って自慢のギターやアンプを寄付するのですが、あまりの激しさと音量のためにデイルはアンプを次々と壊してしまいます。
５０数台目のアンプを壊されたときにレオはようやくデイルの意図を理解し、Showman アンプ、そしてリヴァーブセットをデイルのためにデザインします。ちなみにデイルが目指していたのは名ジャズ・ドラマーのジーン・クルーパのようなエネルギッシュなサウンド。自然の叫び、波のうねりを表現したかったのだそうです。
デイルはその後もエレキギターの限界に挑戦して行き、天才ギタリストのジミ・ヘンドリックスやエディ・ヴァン・ヘイレンなど、多くのギタリストに影響をおよぼすことになります。
2Surf Beat / Dick Dale and His Deltones
Dick Dale enjoyed hero status among his fellow surfers way before the media came up with the term ‘surf music’. The titles for most of his songs, ‘Surf Beat’ for example, came from his fans who shouted out the first thing that came to mind upon hearing Dale’s attempt to capture the sound and energy of the waves using his guitar as a kind of percussive instrument. It wasn’t long before they dubbed him the ‘King of the Surf Guitar’.
His desire to create a certain sound led him to push the limits of the guitars and amps given to him by Leo Fender. After Dale blew up Fender’s 50th or so amp, the inventor asked Dale why he insisted on playing so loud. To this, Dale answered that he wanted to emulate the highly energetic and flamboyant style of the jazz drummer Gene Kruper and express the roar of the waves with his guitar. Having understood Dale’s intent, Fender came up with the now famous Showman amp. It was the first of a long and fruitful collaboration that changed the history of rock ‘n’ roll.
