７０年代から８０年代にかけてカルト的人気を誇ったガーランド・ジェフリーズはブルックリン生まれのシンガー・ソングライター。黒人と白人、それにプエルトリコ人の血を引くということでまさに人種のるつぼ、ニューヨークを体現したような人。音楽の方もかなりのミックスで、レゲエ、ソウル、ブルース、ロックの要素をごくごく自然に取り入れてきました。
クラスメートの殆どがアイリッシュ系やイタリア系の白人で、通っていたカソリック教会で唯一褐色の肌をしていたというジェフリーズ、人種差別やアイデンティティーの問題を題材にした曲も少なくありません。1977年に発表したセカンド・アルバム「ゴースト・ライター」はそうした内容だけでなく、ニューヨークでの暮らしぶりを描いており、中でも「ニューヨーク・スカイライン」はニューヨークへの愛情を感じさせる名曲です。
ジェフリーズ自身、フェイスブックへのメッセージでニューヨークについてこんなことを書いています。
「NYは生まれ育った街。生きるために必要なこと全てを教えてくれた大好きな街だ。ニューヨークに対する愛情の強さはルー・リードと１、２を争うと思う。この歌はそうした気持ちを表していて、いちばん好きな歌の一つだ。」
ルー・リードといえば、アメリカを代表するロック・ミュージシャン。1967年にアンディ・ウォーホルに認められ、ウォーホルのプロデュースによる「The Velvet Underground and Nico」でデビューし、４枚のアルバムを発表後、ソロデビューをし、現在もニューヨークを拠点に精力に活動していますが、ジェフリーズとは大学時代からの友人で、レコーディングに協力をしたり、コンサートに飛び入り参加をしたりなすることもあります。ベルギーでのライブの模様をご覧ください。
New York Skyline / Garland Jeffreys
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Garland Jeffreys is a singer-songwriter of mixed African-American, Caucasian and Puerto Rican heritage; a true son of the New York melting pot. He has never made the Top 40 in the United States, and is more popular in Europe, but in the 1970s and early 80s, he commanded a cult following with his thoughtful autobiographical songs and unique blend of rock and roll, reggae, blues and soul.
Most of his classmates were Irish or Italian Americans. He went to a Catholic church. He recalls being ‘the only one who looked like me in the neighborhood’. Naturally, his music takes up the subject of racial prejudice and identity. But that’s not all. In his second album ‘Ghost Writer’, he also sings about love, not just for people, but for the city he grew up in. Regarding the song ‘New York City Skyline’, he writes on Facebook: New York Skyline” says it all. My city – the city I love. I don’t know who loves it more – me or Lou Reed, but it’s a hell of a town. It’s taught me everything I know and perhaps, everything I need to know.
Of all the songs I’ve written, this is one of my favorites and the album that it comes from, Ghostwriter, will always be uniquely special to me. The song sure does bring back memories.’
Lou Reed is actually a close friend. They met at Syracuse University, before Reed achieved fame as the leader of the Velvet Underground. They’ve often worked together, making impromptu appearances at each other’s concerts. The Youtube video was originally posted by Jeffreys himself on Facebook and was taken at the Lokerse Feesten in Belgium.
